| Young Greens Germany welcome start of the constitutional convention The Grüne Jugend welcomes the Constitutional Convention as a big step
towards a more integrated EU with democratic and transparent structures. We
notice positively, that the Convention publicly meets and discusses and also
that the European Parliament as well as national Parliaments and applicant
countries take an active part. On the other hand we criticize that women are
underrepresented (17 women are among 105 members) as well as young people
and that the German members (e.g. Erwin Teufel) are unfortunately no real experts on
European policy. We hope that the Convention will discuss courageous and broad suggestions
for a common European future. In our eyes the Convention has the unique
chance to discuss the EU without taking national interests as much into
consideration as the Council of Europe does. Not occupied by horse-trading
and daily politics the Convention will hopefully develop a draft for an
European Constitution that will bring the People of Europe closer together.
The European Constitution should be led by values and principles such as
democracy, sustainability, equal rights and liberal human rights. It must
stand for a more integrated - maybe even federalist - European Union guided
by the principle of subsidiary. Such a Constitution must be legitimised by
the European people in a referendum.
