9 May: Europe Day for Europe’s Future
The Convention on the Future of Europe has the opportunity to lay the foundations for a genuine European democracy, and to make the Union fit for the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. It has the possibility to establish a united and enlarged Europe which is a solid and democratic political community, close to its citizens, not only a market with a single currency.
We, the young people of Europe, on the occasion of 9 May, ask the Convention on the Future of Europe to draft a genuine Federal Constitution for the European Union which should:
* transform the Union into a genuine European Federation
* enshrine democracy and accountability, and preserve Europe’s diversity
* set out the rights and values of all European citizens in the Charter of Fundamental Rights
* define the powers and the limits on the institutions of the European Union, with a true European government based on the Commission, and the Parliament and the Council acting always together, with the Council as a genuine second Chamber of the States
* give to the Federation competence for the single market and monetary union, but also for employment and social affairs, foreign, security and defence policy, immigration policy, environmental protection, and the fight against international crime and terrorism.
For unity, for democracy, for accountability, for justice
