JEF Europe (Young European Federalists) welcomes the decision of the Spring Summit in Brussels to re-launch negotations in the IGC, with the view to adopt the first European Constitution in time for the European Parliament elections.

“The Constitution will give the EU a new face that will make it easier for the citizens to identify with,” stated Jon Worth, the president of JEF-Europe.

“All European citizens must have the chance to express their opinion on the Constitution at the European Elections in June.”

“As JEF-Europe has long campaigned, the EU urgently needs a Constitution in order to function effectively.”

All European Governments should understand that after the decision made today in Brussels failure is not an option. The text produced by the Convention should be adopted without amendment.

“The failure of the December summit proved that the only element missing inside the EU is the political will of the national governments to move forward and face the challenges that Europe need to overcome. We hope than minor issues will not be used again as an excuse to block the procedure decided upon today,” continued Jon Worth.

JEF Europe has been committed for several decades to a campaign for a Federal European Constitution. In the months to come, until the European Elections, federalists all over Europe will send a clear message to the Governments that reflects the general public opinion: that a fundamental part of the European Parliament Elections in June is the debate on the Constitution.

Constitution: de nouveau sur la ligne de départ

Les Jeunes Européens Fédéralistes (JEF Europe) saluent la décision du Sommet européen de printemps, qui s’est tenu à Bruxelles, et qui a décidé de relancer les négociations de la CIG, afin que soit adoptée la première Constitution européenne avant les élections du Parlement européen.

«La Constitution donnera un nouveau visage à l’Europe et permettra aux citoyens de s’identifier plus facilement à elle.» a estimé Jon Worth, Président de JEF-Europe.

«Tous les citoyens européens doivent avoir la possibilité d’exprimer leur opinion sur la Constitution lors des élections européennes de juin.»

«Nous le disons depuis longtemps: la Constitution est un besoin urgent pour que l’UE fonctionne de façon efficace.»

Tous les gouvernements européens devraient comprendre qu’après la décision d’aujourd’hui, l’échec n’est plus permis. Il faut que le texte de la Convention soit adopté sans modification.

«L’échec du sommet de décembre a montré que la seule chose qui fasse défaut dans l’UE est la volonté politique des gouvernements nationaux d’avancer et de répondre aux enjeux auxquels l’Europe doit faire face,» a ensuite estimé Jon Worth. «Nous espérons que les questions secondaires ne seront pas à nouveau utilisées comme un prétexte pour bloquer la procédure décidée aujourd’hui.»

JEF-Europe est engagée depuis plusieurs décennies dans une campagne pour une Constitution européenne fédérale. Les mois qui viennent, jusqu’aux élections européennes, seront pour les fédéralistes l’occasion de faire passer aux gouvernements un message clair reflétant l’opinion du plus grand nombre: une part centrale des élections européennes de juin sera consacrée au débat sur la Constitution.
