Józef OLEKSY (Poland)

Biography

On March 3, 1995, Józef Oleksy became prime minister of the Republic of Poland. He had been marshal (speaker) of the Sejm (lower house of parliament) since 1989. He is a member of the Polish Council of the European Movement, the Political Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and is deputy chairman of the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland Party.

Józef Oleksy was born in Nowy Sacz, Poland, on June 22, 1946. In 1969, he completed studies at the Foreign Trade Faculty of Warsaw's Main School of Planning and Statistics and began his career on the research and teaching staff of the Foreign Trade Faculty of the Main School of Business. He received a doctorate of economics in 1977. In 1989, he was a cabinet minister in charge of cooperation with trade unions. He also served as deputy chairman of the Foreign Trade and Maritime Committee and member of the Assembly of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
