Vytenis ANDRIUKAITIS (Lithuania)

Biography

Born: August 9, 1951 in Balunsk region, the village of Kiusur, the Autonomous Republic of Jakutija. Parents - deportees of 1941. Returned to Lithuania in 1958.

Education: Finished Kaunas secondary school No 25 with honours. Graduated from Kaunas Medical Institute (currently the Medical University) as a surgeon. 19979-1984 - a student by correspondence at Vilnius State University, the Department of History. Graduated with honours.

Employment: From 1976 till 1985 worked at Kaunas and Ignalina hospitals. From 1984 till 1990 - a surgeon at Vilnius Republican hospital. Has published articles on the history of medicine and surgery. A member of the International Association of Physician-parliamentarians, a member the Lithuanian Association of Physicians, a member of the Lithuanian Association of Heart.

Political Career:
In 1975-1982 participated in the activity of the illegal university of humanistic self-educational thought named after A. Strazdelis and in 1976 he was arrested by Soviet authorities for that activity and sentenced to 3 years of forced registration in Ignalina.

Elected to the Supreme Council - Reconstituent Seimas - in 1990-1992. A member of the group which prepared the March 11th documents, a member of the National Scientific Conception and National Health Conception Group, a member of the groups preparing the Constitution.

Member of the Seimas since 1992, worked in the Health Care, Social Affairs and Labour Committee, assisted in drawing up draft laws on social, labour, health care, state administration, was the head of working groups responsible for drawing up draft laws. A member of the European Committee on Human rights and Legal Affairs.
