Swedish Farmers' Party U-turn over federalism

The Swedish Centre Party, traditionally the party of farmers and rural communities, is preparing a U-turn over federalism. Previously only used in attacks on Brussels and the EU, the Centre Party leadership now espouses federalism as the founding principle of their constitutional policies. The Centre Party leadership wants the EU to be stronger, but involved in fewer policy areas. The policy shift, set out in a document prepared by the leadership for a party congress this summer, is expected to be very controversial in the party.
