June 10, 2003 Convention looks set for consensus in its final week After three days of intense negotiations, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing brought his Convention close to a final deal on the institutional framework for the enlarged European Union.
Background:
The 105-member European Convention is expected to reach consensus on its final draft of the future EU Constitution at its last plenary session on 12 and 13 June 2003. The Convention is due to propose its draft text to the EU leaders gathered for the Thessaloniki European Council on 20 June 2003. The Constitution is expected to simplify the current EU Treaties, foster even closer integration between the Member States and prepare the Union's institutions for enlargement to 10 new members.
Issues:
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the Convention Chairman, forged a compromise that might get a green light from the Convention at its last session on 12 and 13 June 2003.
