Commissioner calls for French poll on Constitution

PASCAL LAMY- the Trade Commissioner wants a referendum on the constitution in France so that the French can renew their marriage contract with Europe.

Trade commissioner Pascal Lamy has called for France to "renew its marriage contract" with Europe in a referendum on the proposed EU Constitution.

In an interview with French daily Le Monde, Mr Lamy says, "I think it would be good to have a referendum, precisely to renew the marriage contract between the French people and Europe".

Mr Lamy goes on to say that he is in favour of such a vote only if people stop "shooting the messenger" in the debate over Europe and stop presenting Europe in its worst possible light.
