September 24, 2003 Poland rules out referendum on EU constitution In short:
The Polish parliament has rejected the country's right-wing opposition's demand to hold a referendum on the future EU constitution.
Brief news:
Poland's opposition argues that Polish voters have accepted membership of the EU under the conditions defined in the Treaty of Nice, which were considerably modified by the European Convention. According to a recent poll in the leading Polish newspaper, Rzeczpospolita, some 81 per cent of Poles want to have a say on the future EU constitution in a referendum. Only 13 per cent of Poles agree that the parliament should ratify the constitution without a popular consultation.
