December 10, 2003 'On exactly the same wavelength' - Gerhard Schroeder and Jacques Chirac, over a constitution for an enlarged European Union The German Chancellor and the French President have made a joint appeal to their EU partners to back the existing constitutional draft as is, or close to it.
Schroeder was accompanied by Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer for the talks in Paris, ahead of the EU summit starting on Friday in Brussels.
Chirac said he and Schroeder would not accept an accord at any price, not under just any conditions. 'We want an accord which respects our idea of the Europe of tomorrow, which conforms with the whole of what we have built.'
Spain and Poland want to keep privileges negotiated in 2000. France and Germany want to retain their influence in an expanding EU. Officials say the chances of a deal at the summit are only slightly better than 50-50.
